EL GECO VERDE is a family-run off-grid hotel situated in the heart of the magical Altiplano de Granada
A short drive from the charming mountain village of Castril and the natural park which shares its name. Combined with the bordering Natural Park of Cazorla, this is the most extensive protected nature reserve in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. Awarded UNESCO Geopark status in 2020, the Altiplano region is a haven for hikers, outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers with its distinctive geographical features and diverse landscapes.
The hotel, with commanding views to the nearby mountain ranges, works in harmony with nature, utilising renewable energies to minimise emissions, hosting visitors in comfort, but with the lowest possible carbon footprint.

El Geco Verde is a converted Andalucian farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and extended. The hotel sits proudly on top of a hill in the middle of spectacular countryside, and ringed by eight acres of olive and almond groves
Legend has it...
that Silvario, the original owner, discovered a pot of Moorish gold while digging in the fields nearby, and it was this lucky find which enabled this man of modest means to build such a large cortijo (Andalucian farmhouse) on the site.
A restored gem
Sadly, only part of the original building could be saved, as it was in a ruinous condition when it was purchased in 2004 A traditional feel has been maintained through the use of natural materials such as hand-made roof tiles, stone and wood.
Choose a sustainable travel
The new parts of the building benefit from excellent passive design and insulation in order to stay cool in summer, yet warm up quickly and retain warmth in winter.
Ecological principles inform the installations for electricity, central heating and hot water.
We have designed both indoor and outdoor areas to feel natural, spacious and harmonious, taking our inspiration from the countryside around us. Outdoor spaces include a grand exterior terrace, shaded by a mighty Spanish oak tree.

The terrace is the perfect place to appreciate the hotel´s magnificent rural setting. Here you can relax with a drink, observe the local wildlife or simply soak up some glorious Spanish sunshine.
cozy atmosphere
An unusual double aspect fireplace separates the grand dining room from the cosy lounge/library. A powerful pellet burning stove at the other end of the dining room maintains a cheerful glow throughout the winter months. The living room boasts a library, TV and a selection of books and videos about the Altiplano region, as well as novels, films, magazines, table games and DVDs which guests can borrow.
